Keep Houseplants Groomed

A clean houseplant is a healthier houseplant, and without dust on its leaves, it uses the sun’s energy more efficiently for photosynthesis, says Dr. Dave Williams, a horticulturist with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

To clean leaves, dampen paper towels, cloths or sponges and carefully wipe upper and lower leaf surfaces. Add a bit of insecticidal soap or dish soap (diluted to 2 percent in water) if you like.  To prevent any damage, test a small area of the leaf first.

Removing yellow, damaged or dead leaves also helps plants stay healthier. Cut at the base of the flower stalk or remove faded or dead flowers.

If you use leaf shine products, only spray the upper leaf surfaces so as not to inhibit normal leaf transpiration (water loss from leaves). Clean, healthy leaves are attractive without a high shine.
